Jean-Christophe Le Coze is a research director at INERIS (National Institute for the Industrial Environment and Risks) in France. He holds a PhD (2011) in safety and risk management from Ecole des Mines de Paris. He has been studying and working with safety-critical organisations for more than twenty years (chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, nuclear, railways), promoting a human, sociological and pragmatic view of safety. He is an expert in safety culture, the ‘new view’, high-reliability and (ultra) safe performance in an increasingly global operating landscape. Jean-Christophe is regularly consulted by private and public organisations. He is known for his combination of practice and theory, his promotion of safety science research and is regularly invited to workshops, seminars and conferences. Examples of his popular talks are “Welcome to the new world of safety” and “Understanding the blues of safety professionals”. He is the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of several books published both in English and French: Safety in the Digital Age (with Stian Antonsen); Post Normal Accident. Revisiting Perrow’s classic; Safety Science Research. Evolution, Challenges and New Directions; Des usines, des matières et des hommes. De la Sécurité industrielle dans la chimie (with Michèle Dupré) ; Trente Ans d’accidents. His recent articles include “Coupling and Complexity at the global scale”, “Safety as a network, digital and global reality” and “The ‘new view’ of human error: origins, ambiguities, successes, and critiques” both published in Safety Science, of which he is one of the Associate Editors. Jean-Christophe is member of Think Tanks and teaches safety in engineering and sociology universities.
