About Bob van Asselt
Officer Royal Netherlands AirForce (rtd AC), Crew/Team Resource Management Trainer, Human Factors and Safety Specialist, Interim Safety Manager
End-seventies I started as a fighter pilot in the RNLAF. Trained in Canada, I was introduced to what I like to call ‘Applied Safety Performance’. As a pilot and later al/so as department head and as squadron commander, I experienced the importance and impact of Humans on Safety Performance.
After thirty years, I left the Airforce and started as an independent trainer and consultant. I initially focused on Human Factors and Crew Resource Management training, but after a while I combined this with safety management experiences from my military career.
“The fact that organizations have procedures to handle problems does not mean that they understand, let alone have solved their problems.”
So don’t ask me to draft you a bunch of safety procedures. For me safety is to know what your goal is, act according to the situation, adjust as you go along, and use what is available to the best of your knowledge and skills: be resilient! But above all, be aware of the humans in the system; be aware of their brilliance, their biases, their flaws, their uniqueness, their stupidities; be aware of their humanity and learn to trust them.
I offer interactive training, workshops and presentations on Human Factors, (Crew) Resource Management and Safety. I engage the audience to new safety ideas and practices. And I like to challenge the audience to start performing and to stop focusing on compliance.
