About Bart Vanraes
Prevention Advisor, "Tipp-Ex Researcher"
Bart Vanraes is a passionate freelance prevention advisor who strives to make a real difference together with others. With over 20 years of experience in Operations within the chemical sector and a background as a former firefighter, he offers companies pragmatic, hands-on solutions to further integrate well-being and safety into their organizations.
In addition, he is an inspirator who challenges conventional thinking and practices in the field of safety.
Bart Vanraes, also researcher of Tipp-Ex accidents: Tipp-Ex accidents are workplace incidents that have indeed occurred but are not, or not fully, reported; people choose to conceal the incident under a proverbial layer of Tipp-Ex.
What began as a thesis has grown into a lifelong mission. This globally underestimated issue, even among safety professionals, has motivated me to publish a white paper. I continue to research the topic and regularly give lectures to colleagues in the safety sector, as well as to organizations such as the Dutch Labor Inspectorate and Belgian policymakers, including cabinets Dermagne and Vandenbroucke. www.tippexongeval.be

Cognitive Ergonomics
Or ‘How Design Can Kill: Tips to Eliminate System Errors and Recognize Error Traps.’
Cognitive ergonomics is about how we process knowledge and information from our environment. Red means bad and indicates stop, while green means good. Once you start paying attention, you’ll notice these examples everywhere. There are good ones, but unfortunately also many bad examples. The world around you will never look the same again.
Fix The Fire Door
Fire doors are ‘everywhere’. Unlike fire extinguishers, these doors bizarrely have no pictograms and no annual inspections. Why? No idea. So we need to fix that. These doors really do more than a fire extinguisher.
How do we bring these forgotten heroes back into the spotlight, and how do we ensure that these doors are operational everywhere again? It’s not really that difficult, because they are already everywhere. It’s educational, as most people know little about them. But it’s also practical, as we provide a simple solution.
Trauma in the Workplace
As a former firefighter, I witnessed how things can go wrong. A session for prevention advisors. What is trauma, what can we do proactively, and what to watch out for if disaster were to strike. Better safe than sorry.
With practical tips and examples, this session is appreciated, even though it is a more difficult theme.
Fresh perspective on safety
Is safety more than just the absence of accidents?
How do we steer clear of binary and black-and-white thinking? How do we create a learning organization, shifting from scare to care, and from paper safety to practices on the work floor that promote success?
Drift Into Failure
Accidents do not happen suddenly. The loose tile, the malfunctioning detection system had been present for years, and along with many other factors, contributed to the events of that day when things went wrong. This intriguing theory by Sidney Dekker is linked to several of the notorious disasters of the past century, starting with the great villain, the iceberg, that caused the Titanic to sink. But why did hundreds of other ships survive that ‘evil’ iceberg?Psychological Safety – A term that, to my great surprise, is unknown to many safety and HR managers, despite the enormous success of Amy Edmondson’s research. Psychological safety is a fundamental aspect of an organization. If this form of safety is lacking, it becomes a waiting game for problems, with tensions that can escalate significantly.
